More Guided Reading

Hi everyone! I can't WAIT to announce the winner of the giveaway! I'm so excited I can barely stand it!! :)

A few weeks ago, I mentioned I was reading "The Next Step in Guided Reading." I am still loving it just as much as I was that very first day. One of my teammates is reading it too! SO excited to work with her this year!! :)

Chapter 2 is all about grouping students and assessing. There are lots of fabulous tips on giving and using running records to prepare your instruction. As I was reading this chapter, it totally brought me back to my college days in my literacy classes!! I remember studying these exact things, but through the years, I feel like it's easy to get set in our ways and forget how we were taught! I was not that detailed with my running records this past year, and I really want to get better this year!

Anyway, she discusses three types of errors that students might make. Either the mistake doesn't make sense in the text, it doesn't sound right in the sentence, or it doesn't look right based on how the word is written.

An example would be a student saying "puppy" when the word is "dog." That work would make sense in the sentence, but it wouldn't look right. If a kiddo is NOT self-monitoring, they might skip right over that mistake. In my opinion,  especially for beginning readers, this is a common mistake and won't affect their comprehension. But of course, we want them to build their accuracy and fluency as well as their ability to constantly self-monitor.

I made these posters to remind myself to ask these questions, and to train them to ask themselves! :) Grab em if you want em! I think they will be super helpful when prompting...if a student makes a mistake, it's so easy to have them turn and look at the posters and ask "Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right?"

I feel like this post is kinda rambly! :) My mind is going 1,000 MPH! I think all teachers feel this way in August. I am SO ready for like the 4th week of school, haha. Your little ones are in a routine, you are KIND OF in a routine of waking up, and you know what to prepare for the next day/week. Right now it's just madness! :)
