Daily 5, Anyone?

Okay...all summer I have been torn about doing Daily 5 or Debbie Diller stations. For the past two years, I have done Debbie Diller and I love it. I used Daily 5 in student teaching, so I feel somewhat familiar with it, but definitely not an expert in the implementation. :) I have tried to follow lots of D5 principles in my stations, like...
  • We always practice building our stamina in reading. One time, my principal brought a bunch of visitors into our room during stations and one of my littles was reading independently and he asked what he was doing and he was like "um, I'm building my stamina...that means I can read for a long time." Shining teacher moment!!! :)
  • I try to provide lots of choices even in my Debbie Diller stations...there are always 4-5 choices for them to choose in Pocket Chart, Word Work, Smartboard, etc.
  • Anchor Charts and I Can charts are the very first step in teaching expectations for stations, and they were plastered all over my room
This year, my sweet friend Sarah asked if I wanted to start D5 with her. I was hesitant because I had a few stations I really love, haha and have made tons of things for this summer. One of them is pocket chart station...I just bought 3 more pocket charts, and I just love them. I put sorts, ABC order, sight words, the possibilities are endless! If I was completely honest, though, I was hesitant because I didn't want to give up the control. With the exception of buddy reading and reading independently, I told the kiddos where they should do their station. To me, that was important.  But, I decided to give up that control this year. In place of it, I'm going to do LOTS of modeling, LOTS of discussions about making good choices during stations, and LOTS of opportunities for practice. We will see how that goes. :)

To get started, I went ahead and made the cute little D5 bookmarks I found on Pinterest.

They are from 3rd Grade Thoughts I love her blog, and she has TONS of Daily 5 ideas. Alot of them would be perfect for my babies who need to be challenged a bit or for enrichment activities because they finish classwork so quickly. I made mine Zebra theme...of course. :) I found these super awesome zebra cliparts at Scrappin' Doodles that I'm pretty sure were designed for exactly what I am using them for. Hahah. I made 25 bookmarks, and each one has a different order. Of course, more than one kiddo will be at a station at a time, but none of them will be totally overloaded. I think it worked out that no more than 5 kids should be at any station at a time. My bookmarks turned out like this:
I will cut them out and laminate them this week, hopefully.I am not sure where these are going to go yet, but they are a larger version of each station and the picture to go with it. They will probably go above our I charts on a special Daily 5 board I'm hoping to make room for.

I think they turned out very cute, and I'm so happy I found Scrappin' Doodles. What would I do without them!?!??!  The last thing I made was a set of Task Cards for each station. THIS is where I overcame the first obstacle I mentioned...making sure they still got to do all of the engaging (and I think important) activities at stations like Word Wall, Pocket Chart, Smartboard. I just made sure to include those in the Task Cards. I made them in Zebra (for me and all my animal print obsessed friends) and in Chevron for anyone else. :) My bestie has this super cute room, but zebra would just not go in there, haha, so I'm hoping she can use the Chevron ones. Here is a list of the tasks they can choose:

Listen to Reading
-Storyline Online
-Book flix
-CD Players (PS...I heard they sell these for super cheap at thrift stores...definitely gonna be hitting those up on Monday)
-Do a Reader Response sheet (I will be making this these week and uploading those...definitely as a Freebie!)

Read to Self
-Read my sight word book (I just made Sarah Cooley's version of her Sight Word Sticker book...you can get her awesome version HERE)
-Read a book from my book box
-Read my poetry notebook
-Read a teacher book (the read alouds I use)
-Read a class library book
-Use highlighting tape to find sight words in the books in my bag

Read to Someone
-Read the room with pointers
-Read buddy books (Books I have two copies of)
-Read a book from of book box to each other
-Read a teacher book together
-Read a class library book together
-Read our poetry notebooks together
-Read a big book together <---- This is another station I really wanted to include in our station time
I didn't put ask each other questions about the book, because we will talk about that at the beginning. I want them to do that all the time, and be integrated into whichever task they choose.

Word Work
-Choose a pocket chart activity (they will be in zipper pouches with mini pocket charts)
-Choose a magnet board activity (on cookie sheets)
-Make words with the special tools in the box (stickers, letter beads, marshmallows, play-doh, etc)
-Do a WW activity page (word searches, color by sight word, etc.)
-Do a class names activity (one of my FAVORITES!)
-Play a sight word game (like Concentration)
-Do an activity for my WTW group (Words their Way is the differentiated spelling program we use)
-Do a Smartboard activity
-Do a Making Words activity
-Rainbow write sight words
-Type sight words
-Do an ABC order activity
-Give a spelling test to a buddy

 Work on Writing
-Write in my writer's notebook
-Add to our class journals
-Write a poem
-Illustrate a poem
-Make a list
-Do a Write the Room activity
-Write a sticker story with 3 stickers
-Do a pocket chart writing activity (like parts of speech and punctuation)
-Edit my writing
-Publish my writing with fancy pens
The last two are done during Writer's Workshop, but sometimes they get on such a roll they want to continue it during stations!

Here are some pictures of the task cards I made

I hope you can use these in your classroom! If you have any questions, please ask and of course I'll share! :) I'm really looking forward to this new journey, and all the great discussions we can have about it!

Just a reminder, everything related to Daily 5 is a product of the 2 sisters! I don't take ANY credit for these ideas. :)

  7. I have read the Daily 5 book and I'm currently reading the CAFE book. When I become a teacher I'm hoping to be able to use this strategy in my classroom. I would love to know more about how it is working in your classroom. It is always nice to hear results from someone NOT trying to sell the strategy :o)
